I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, having qualified in 1985. I have spent the last twenty years as a consultant accountant and Interim Finance Director in the social housing and public sectors. My expertise in this area has included raising loan finance in the capital markets, compiling business plans including a PFI bid for re-provisioning residential care homes, implementing new IT systems, making court applications for rent arrears and representing the client in court, appraising development proposals and implementing cash flow forecasting.
As a member of numerous Senior Management Teams, I developed strategic direction and led on financial strategy. I have managed and motivated Finance department personnel, drafting job descriptions, person specifications and recruiting new staff. I drafted standing orders, financial regulations, policies and procedures, updated corporate plans and compiled risk maps. I managed the statutory accounts process for a number of associations and led on audit liaison and have managed rent increases and reviewed service charge policies.
I have also set up two Finance Departments for new housing associations transferring from local authorities with some staff transferring under TUPE rules. I developed the chart of accounts, implemented policies and procedures, set up a staffing structure including salaries, recruited and trained staff. I developed business plans, budgets and management accounts, presented reports and provided training to Boards. I arranged banking facilities and agreed reporting requirements with lenders.
In my consultancy roles, I have undertaken a number of best value reviews, reviews of the Finance function, pre-validation of Key Performance Indicators, carried out financial evaluations to find merger partners, reviewed staffing structures and led major projects.
Rob and I formed our partnership in August 2012 and we decided to expand our focus to other business sectors, concentrating on providing accounting services and consultancy to a wider range of businesses whilst limiting our geographical area to Croydon, London and the South East. We are now busy expanding our practice and looking for new clients.
We have recently completed a forensic audit for a client, as part of a complex legal case, working closely with the solicitors. We are also providing accounting services to limited companies as well as sole traders and partnerships and have helped clients to set up new enterprises, as well as undertaking consultancy assignments.
I am passionate about adding value and I have an excellent ability to solve problems creatively. We deliver high-quality results to challenging deadlines and have outstanding business planning skills. We get to know our clients’ businesses, understanding the strategic requirements and ensure that they are translated into operations. I value all of our clients and strive to provide exceptional services, taking particular satisfaction when our existing clients recommend us to their friends and families.
I joined Hilary as a partner in August 2012, after deciding that Accountancy was the profession that best suited my abilities. I am currently studying hard to gain my CIMA qualification, and hope to be qualified in the near future.
I first worked with Hilary part-time, whilst I was still at school. I quickly learned that client care is the most important aspect of our work and understanding clients’ businesses is vital in providing timely and relevant advice.
Upon leaving school, I began a career with the Home Office, working there for over eight years. I have always believed in maintaining a high standard of integrity, pushing myself to strive for quality in my work, and utilising my excellent personal skills with colleagues, clients or customers and giving due care when necessary.
Now in my accountancy partnership with Hilary, I deal with a wide variety of issues, ranging from enquiries from potential new clients to providing advice and assistance to our existing customers. I have learnt how to draft clients’ accounts, from bank statements and receipts, and how to complete tax returns. I can prepare VAT returns for both clients and the partnership and run payrolls for clients. Like Hilary, I value all of our clients and welcome new ones. I also strive to provide exceptional services, being as helpful as possible, and give considerable attention to quality.
I strongly believe my sound professional and personal skills have always been abundant during my careers, and are stronger than ever since joining Hilary as a partner in August 2012. We both work exceptionally well together, and are looking forward to many more years of success in our business.
